Itinerant exhibition CU TENDA – STORIES WITH AROMANIANS

On  July 31st, the travelling exhibition CU TENDA – STORIES WITH AROMANIANS arrives in Bulgaria at City Gallery of Fine Arts Plovdiv - House of Mexican Art.

The exhibition, designed by the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant from Bucharest, Romania and organized in partnership with ”Paisii Hilendarski” University Plovdiv and Foundation ”Stoyna Krastanova”, proposes an insight into the imaginary of a culture that has symbolically shaped the cultural map of the Balkans.

Aromanians, also known as Vlachs, Kutso-Vlachs, Macedo-Vlachs, Balkan Romanians, or South-danubian Romanians are seldom referred to as the embodyment of hommo balcanicus. Their mobility and opening, along with the preservation of their language and customs have enriched the dynamics of the South-Eastern European history and the living memory of the lands through which they have passed.

Designed as a visual essay, the exhibition CU TENDA – STORIES WITH AROMANIANS reconstructs symbolically and fragmentarily through testimonies, self-representations, texts and elements of material and immaterial heritage, the imaginary of the Aromanian world as part of the imaginary of the Balkan cultures in constant movement. Starting with the memory of the image-as-witness and the power of suggestion of the objects that build the community’s heritage, we reveal to the public a series of visuals, sounds and archetypal objects that have become iconic for the Aromanian community, as well as a series of relationships within the archaic world.

The opening event including a concert of Balkan improvisation music from the experimental Romanian group multumult,  will take place at City Gallery of Fine Arts Plovdiv - House of Mexican Art (11 Artin Gidikov St., 4000 Plovdiv Old Town) on the 31st of July, at 18.30h. The public from Plovdiv is invited to explore the Aromanian stories, images and sounds of CU TENDA exhibition until August 27th.
