Odysseus’ is a large-scale show for the journey of the human heart. Director: Diana Dobreva. Text: Alexander Sekulov. Set design: Mira Kalanova. Music: Petya Dimanova. Video design: Petko Tanchev. Live Music: Yannis Pantazis. Stefan Elenkov is playing Odysseus. Participants: Stilian Zhelyazkov, Dobrin Dosev, Alexey Kozhuharov, Ivaylo Hristov, Simeon Alexiev, Ivana Papazova and others. The show is in partnership with the National Theatre of Greece, as well as with artists from the Balkans and mediterranean countries. The project is implemented by the N. O. Masalitinov Drama Theatre Plovdiv.

Crafts Enter the Mahala

 A charity bazaar of applied arts created by young people from different ethnic groups from Nikola Vaptsarov School in Plovdiv under the guidance of famous Bulgarian artists. All the money will be distributed by the school for future creative initiatives. The project is implemented by the Metaart Foundation

An event related to the Together in the Circle of Paneurhythmy – A Harmony of Body, Mind and Spirit project, by the Vidya Proekt Association. Svetla Baltova, a doctor and holistic therapist, will be the host.

Smoke. Tobacco Stories

The exposition features archives, photography, video, films, literature and art works by most renowned Bulgarian artists that explore the history of Plovdiv through the tobacco industry. Art Liberty – From the Berlin Wall to Street Art

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 2019, the only traveling collection of original fragments of the Berlin Wall is coming to Plovdiv. The exhibition consists of works created by the predecessors of the Berlin street art movement, as well as by contemporary street artists. The exhibition is made possible by Plovdiv 2019 in partnership with the French Institute Bulgaria.

EURECA! Travelling Exhibition

 Muzeiko Science Center for Children presents in Plovdiv some of the most popular discoveries of the 19th and 20th centuries. Playing kids and their parents will learn how the X-ray apparatus, the telephone, the Morse code machine, as well as inventions such as the Slinky spring, the hot air balloon and human-powered transport came to be.

Women in Urban and Rural Areas

Combining the power of the photography and the verbal narrative of the event it points the attention towards life of, at first glimpse, unnoticeable people – the women from the village regions, minorities, poor, elderly women and women with disabilities. The project is an attempt for research of the traditionally accepted role of the women and how they run, visibly or invisibly our society. The project is realized by Gender Alternatives Foundation.

Plovdiv’s Choirs

Plovdiv six choirs musical performances – with no pre-set programme or event, and in direct contact with the audience, outside the customary environment of choir singing. The curator: Boris Rokanov. The choirs are Stefka Blagoeva Plovdiv Boys Choir; Kantikus de Oris Chamber Vocal Group; Chamber Vocal Group, led by Stanimira Manolova; Stefka Blagoeva Men’s Choir; Ivan Spasov Chamber Choir; and the Detska Kitka Choir by the Municipal Children’s Complex.

Ayliak Parade

Before the big Ayliak Parade on 4 May 2019 – a part of Plovdiv 2019 programme, each week in February and March there will be various open workshops: – for new participants, making of carnival costumes and masks. – for the participants in the parade – enrichment of carnival costumes and masks, developing new ideas. – making of big puppets, masks, carnival costumes. The Next Generation

The heroes in the full-length documentary ‘The Next Generation’ are a couple of Jewish families who survived the Holocaust and whose roots are in Bulgaria. They are descendants of Gen. Gabriel Ashkenazi, the TV star Oshrat Kotler, and Dale Djerassy, the son of the world-famous scientist Carl Djerassy. The film is shot in Israel and Bulgaria and follows the search in Plovdiv for these families’ roots, traces, archives and documents. 2019, A Year of the Future…

Second edition of the conference for science fiction and communism as part of the project ‘2019, A Year of the Future…’, dedicated to the exploration of cosmonautics, retro sci-fi and futurism in Bulgarian culture from the 1960s to the present. The conference topic will be the science fiction in the context of communist regime and the Cold War. It will focus on the ways in which the political regimes on both sides of the Iron Curtain used the concept of the future. The project is a Concept Inc production.

Take Away Plovdiv

Artnewscafe will host a presentation of the project ‘Take Away Plovdiv - New Design for the Bulgarian Souvenir’ – revealing the recently developed prototypes for new souvenirs. They are made by architect Penka Stancheva, design studio Artelie and Nikoleta Nosovska, illustrator Teodor Georgiev, Misirkov/Bogdanov, tochka & tochka studio, and jeweler Neva Balnikova. Curators and project producers are Studio Komplekt, whose intention is to change the identity perception of the Bulgarian souvenir.

Tradition Meets the Future

On Sirni Zagovezni holiday (traditional Bulgarian holiday) in Komatevo district the traditional carnival Mummers Games is held. Chitalishte Ivan Vazov 1931 will organize festive concert for the residents and guests of the neighborhood, this year, besides the invited participants and the competition for ‘Best Mummers’ Mask,’ masks will be presented by volunteers in the community center.

Changing

‘Changing’ is a dramatization of ‘Metamorphoses’ by the Norwegian actress Liv Ullmann, and is the first solo performance of the actress Yoana Bukovska-Davidova. Story by: Yoana Bukovska-Davidova. Performed by: Yoana Bukovska-Davidova. Directed by: Gergana Dimitrova. On 12 March, from 13:00 to 15:00, in the Chamber hall will be held a workshop, led by Alexander Galabov and Momchil Aleksiev, about the vision and the mobile application of the performance. From Toledo to Plovdiv. The Way of the Jewish Sephardic Song

The musical and theatre multimedia concert ‘From Toledo to Plovdiv. The Way of the Jewish Sephardic Song’ includes performances of 20 authentic songs in Ladino. The actress Eva Volitzer performs the songs accompanied by three musicians – Yavor Zhelev (flute), Videlin Dzhedzhev (violin) and Hristo Neychev (acoustic guitar). Set designs are by Yana Dvoretska and choreography by Tanya Sokolova. The songs are authentic urban romances, arranged by the renowned Bulgarian folklore scholar Nikolay Kaufman. The project is a production of Galeria Theatre.

Under the motto S V Y A TO (SAINTED WORLD) Atelier Vesselin Roussev will present an exhibition of paintings and graphics of some of the most prominent names in recent Bulgarian art history – Svetlin Rusev, Georgi Genkov, Georgi Bozhilov – Slona, Encho Pironkov, Itsko Maznev, Kolyo Karamfilov, Georgi Simov, Nikolay Nikov – Nicheto, Boyan Raynov. Weekend in Plovdiv 2019

The Council of Tourism Plovdiv invites everyone to get to know the history and cultural life of Plovdiv. Plovdiv is the only stop on the Balkans from the world tour of Dominic Miller. On 16 March, Sting‘s guitarist will present his latest album, Absinthe. Miller‘s band complements the legendary Mike Lindup (Level 42), the famous Belgian bass player Nicolas Fiszman, Santiago Arias – Bandoneon, and Ziv Ravitz – on drums.
